What if our understanding of psychology has been missing something essential?

If you look at the word psychology through the etymology of its root word, psyche, you might be surprised to discover that psyche has historically been associated with the soul or spirit, not just the mind.

As someone who loves etymology, I find this fascinating. I’m a word nerd. I love exploring the origins of words and what they actually mean because, sometimes, the language we use shows us how much we misunderstand the very things we’re trying to understand.

And psychology is a perfect example.

Abstract black and gold flowing patterns symbolizing the deeper layers of psychology and the connection between spiritual understanding and business prosperity.

What If We’ve Been Looking at Only Part of the Picture?

Think about how we typically understand human psychology today.

We study our thoughts, emotions, behaviors, and the experiences that have shaped us. We examine our childhoods, our relationships, our conditioning, and the patterns we carry into adulthood.

We seek to understand why we react the way we do, why certain experiences affect us so deeply, and why we sometimes struggle to change patterns even when we understand where they came from.

Understanding our psychological patterns can help us develop emotional intelligence, make different choices, and create healthier relationships with ourselves and others.

But what if there's another dimension of understanding ourselves that is not just logical, mental, or analytical that deserves just as much attention?

What if understanding the human experience requires us to look beyond the mind and its observable patterns?

The word psyche points us toward a much older understanding of the human being: one that includes the soul.

Historically, the concept of the psyche has carried meanings connected to the soul, life, and the animating principle of a living being. Although modern psychology generally defines itself as the scientific study of the mind and behavior, the word's roots invite us to consider a broader question:

Can we truly understand ourselves if we leave out the spiritual dimension of our existence?

The Missing Dimension: Spiritual Energy

Most conventional psychological approaches examine the mind, including our thoughts and emotions, and how they influence our behavior. These are important dimensions of our experience, but from a spiritual perspective, they don't tell the whole story.

There is also the unseen animating force of life: spiritual energy.

We are not simply minds operating bodies.

We are living beings having a physical experience, with an inner world that extends beyond what can be seen or easily explained.

When we focus only on thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, we risk overlooking the deeper beliefs, inherited expectations, and spiritual disconnection that influence how we experience life.

Understanding our psychological patterns is valuable, but understanding ourselves more fully means exploring the whole of our experience, including the spiritual.

What Does This Have to Do With Business Prosperity?

Your business prosperity is influenced by more than your expertise, marketing strategy, or practical decisions. It's shaped by what you believe about yourself, your relationship with visibility, your willingness to receive, and what you believe is possible.

You can have the strategy and desire to grow, yet still experience a disconnect between what you want to create and how you're showing up to create it.

Sometimes, the next step isn't another strategy. It's understanding yourself more deeply.

What beliefs are influencing your decisions? Are you building from your sense of purpose, or responding to inherited expectations? Are you allowing your lived experience to inform your work?

Gnosis is the deeper knowing of yourself, and it's the first pillar of creating business prosperity and building a business that lasts because it evolves with you.

Gnosis: The Deeper Knowing of Yourself

You can read about yourself and come to identify your human design type; you can analyze your astrological birth chart obsessively, and you can frame your whole business and entire life by what it all says about you. When you begin working with that information through authorship rather than simply following what you've read about yourself, it becomes something you can integrate into your life and work. This is where self-understanding becomes transformative. That's gnosis.

You might know that you have a fear of being visible, for example.

You might understand where that fear originated and even be able to explain it to someone else. But when you recognize how that fear has shaped your decisions, the opportunities you've pursued, and the way you allow yourself to be seen and then intentionally choose to act differently, things change. This is how we step into leadership.

Gnosis invites us to move beyond collecting insights and toward integrating what we discover into how we live, lead, create, and relate to the world.

And this deeper knowing can become a foundation for creating prosperity, not just in financial terms, but in the richness, meaning, and contribution of the life we build and what we leave behind.

The Psychology of Prosperity: The Study of the Soul to Thrive

The Psychology of Prosperity is the study of the soul to thrive.

It begins with the understanding that who you are and what you create are not separate conversations.

Your personal history, emotional intelligence, spiritual understanding, lived experience, and relationship with yourself all influence the way you move through the world. They influence how you make decisions, how you relate to others, and how you approach the work you feel called to do.

Prosperity, through this lens, is not simply about acquiring more, achieving more, or learning how to make a business more profitable. It is also about developing the self-understanding required to build something meaningful without abandoning yourself in the process.

It is about recognizing the relationship between your inner world and the work you bring into the outer world.

And it is about asking a deeper question than How do I become more successful?

Who am I becoming as I build the life and work I want to create?

Because the business you build is influenced not only by what you know how to do but also by who you are as you do it and who you have become in the process.

When we expand our understanding of psychology to include the soul, we create space for a more comprehensive exploration of the human experience, one that brings together our psychological patterns, our emotional lives, our spiritual understanding, and our capacity to create and receive.

This is the conversation I believe we need to have more often, especially as it relates to business.
